Vivien Youlou on Starting Tricking, Injuries and Recovery — INTERVIEW

Hi guys, Vivien is HERE!

I’m here to answer some questions about my career as a tricker and also as an artist. We’re going to talk about different topics like injuries and also fasting.

So I started tricking at the end of 2006. I’ve tried hard since then and started to be known in the tricking world around 2011 with the Bergen Gathering.

My tricking style is mainly power stuff like Cart Full-in, Cart Double Front, FullDleg-in Backout that's like the thing that I kind of "bring" into tricking.

Yeah, so now I'm an artist also. I live with tricking. I just do different performances with tricking. TV shows, musical, everything, advertisements and stuff. Tricker and artist and enjoying life.

How did you first find out about Tricking, and how did you start?

I was at school with one of my friends and during gym class we tried to do like backflip and wallflip. We just tried and tried again and I found out how to do it. Then I started to watch flips on Youtube, to see if there are some other people that can do it. I found Remi Bakkar, this French guy who did like mostly tumbles so I started training that for a few months.

I went to a gym and started to try it. Many months later, I found Anis Cheurfa on Youtube and I totally fell in love with tricking, then Steve Terada and some other trickers, Sesshoumaru and stuff like this and I just decided that tricking was the thing I want to do. Then I kept training since then and yeah, my life happened.

What has beeen your proudest moment in Tricking career so far?

My proudest moment is probably when I first landed Triple Cork. I worked on Triple Cork for ages, during this time Triple Cork didn’t even exist yet, we didn't know if it would be possible to do it. I wasn't the first one to land it of course. I was the 9th I think? and the first one in France and the most important thing for me was to be able to do it with my friend around me, like there is nothing better to learn a new trick with your friend around you and pushing you to be better and I was really proud to be able to do it with them and share it with them. It was a big, big achievement for me and it was a lot of work. A LOT of work.

So I think it's this one, one of them, one of my proudest.

Is it hard for you to find a balance between training for performances and training for tricking?

This is a good question and the answer is no, it's not hard it's really easy for me because tricking is my first love and I will always put more energy into tricking than anything else, even performances. I can choose the kind of show that I want to do and I always do short contracts, nothing more than 10 days for example. I want to spend as much time as possible into tricking and training. These last years have been a bit different because I couldn't train because of my knee. When I am healed, everything will change and I will be able to put a lot of time and effort into tricking again and I can't wait!

You've recently been doing a fasting experiment for more than 2 weeks. How has that been for you?

Yes, that's kind of the new thing that is happening in my life right now. Actually I did 17 days of fasting, of water fast. During these 17 days I spent 12 days without drinking either. The reason I did that is because I really want to heal my jumpers knee on my left leg. I’ve had this jumpers knee since more than two years as I explain it in the video that I made on my Youtube channel. It's been hard, it's been a really hard experience. I think it was worth it.

It helps me in a lot of different ways. I’ve had asthma since I was 2 years old and all my life I've been taking medication. I haven't taken anything in months and it's really weird and I feel great. I feel amazing and I'm pretty sure this medication that I've always been taking had hard and bad impact on me and my body and also in tricking because you can't just take medication that actually is supposed to have bad side effects and just hope it has nothing in 28 years of taking it. So yeah, I'm really happy about that and I can't wait to see the long term results of this experiment and I will of course let you know about this result.

Do you think everyone should try fasting to heal/recover their body? Any other health benefits from it?

Yes, I think i will do it again in the future I will actually try to put fasting into my routine. I don’t know yet exactly how I will do it, maybe 3 days per month, maybe 1 time a week. I will see what is the best way to do it. I can't say that people should do it because I don't have long term results yet. As soon as I will know more about it, as soon as I will have enough experience I will be able to say it. I still can't say right now that it can help you recover because I definitely start to feel the difference right now, even if I haven't get back into hard tricks. It definitely helps me in my regular life like my "normal" human life.

I feel better actually so it's already worth it. As I said, with my asthma it helped me a lot. Yeah it's worth it, I think people should try it at least. You just like need to make sure that you are able, in good health to do it. Yeah, you should try it, at least 3 days it's good. It's a hard experience so be ready.

If you could give your younger self some advice what would it be?

It would be simple. Spend more time taking care of my body. It's so important. I do think that 90% of trickers don’t have the body to handle tricking. I just had the proof like two years ago when I started conditioning hard. I used to be able to train 2 or 3 hours per day, 6 times a week. This is my average of my entire tricking career but when I started conditioning hard I was able to train at least 4 hours a day, sometimes 5 hours a day, 7 times a week. I had no bad sessions, it was crazy, it was one of my craziest time and I improved so much in everything, it was all so easy. I didn't injure myself, I had this jumpers knee but I had jumpers knee a long time before it and it just got a little bit worse and worse because I didn't want to stop because I was in such a good period of tricking. Conditioning, taking care of your body, eating well and all of these kind of things that you can do beside tricking are as important as tricking itself, that's it. I just do tricking to have fun and I hope you will have fun with me soon when I will get back to tricking.

I want to add something, this last year has been a little bit hard for me because I had to choose between tricking and some other stuff. I made some mistakes because I didn't choose tricking when tricking was my main passion. I just want to say that for people that think I kind of quit tricking for different reasons, because of performances or because of injury, I never stopped thinking about tricking, tricking is an obsession for me and I will never stop. I hope I will be able to be back soon, as good as possible and I will always invest time and my energy into tricking and my tricking community.

I hope you enjoyed this interview guys. I hope to see you soon in tricking, in my channel or anywhere else. Take care, hope you enjoy it and see you guys soon!
